Use Your Strengths to Manage ADHD

What are your strengths?

When you think about ADHD, do you often think first about your challenges?  While it is important to have clarity around your challenge, I encourage you to first take your time to identify your strengths.  Go ahead, take some time to think.  Grab a piece of paper and write down at least 4 strengths that you have.  Don’t take time to evaluate, just get them down on paper.  Be as specific as you can.  If more than 4 come to mind, keep going, keep writing.

Brainstorm

After you get those down on paper, brainstorm a little more.  What other strengths can you add?  How can you add a variation to something you already wrote down?  Your new additions might sound close to what you already wrote down, but keep adding as many as you can.

Use Tools

Interview a few people and ask them questions about your strengths.  Some examples are included below.

  1. What strengths do you find in me?
  2. How can I use these strengths more frequently?
  3. What would you tell others about me if they asked about my strengths?

One of my favorite sites for identifying strengths is http://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu.  They have several on-line assessments.  The Brief Strengths Test is a quick one that helps people identify their strengths.  I think you will find it insightful.

What are your strengths?  How do you use them?  I look forward to hearing from you!
